Friends and colleagues of our Special Commission, and fellow members of our Special Commission, we urge you to identify ways you will "Make Macro Matter" back home in your school, community, and professional associations. IT’S TIME MACRO MATTERS! IT’S ‘MACRO MATTERS’ TIME!

The Special Commission to Advance Macro Practice in Social Work

In 2013, the Special Commission to Advance Macro Practice in Social Work was formed to address two critical issues: (1) the low percentage of all MSW students enrolled in a macro concentration/specialization: and (2) limited macro content in many BSW and MSW programs. The Commission grew out of a survey of ACOSA faculty members that documented a clear lack of support encountered in social work schools. This resulted in the Rothman Report (2012) recommending the establishment of a Special Commission to rectify matters. We have been engaging Social Work educators, leaders and members in a campaign to redress this imbalance between macro and micro practice in our profession. Through this campaign we seek to increase the social work profession’s ability to influence and shape public policy, increase the availability of quality social services for marginalized populations, and enhance community well-being. It is especially critical to promote the profession’s social justice ethos, given present-day society’s increased economic inequality and poverty, deteriorating police-community relations, institutional racism, sexual violence, and environmental degradation.

The Special Commission’s ambitious campaign is "20% by 2020." Our goal is to have enrollment in a macro concentration or method up to 20% of all social work graduate students country-wide by the year 2020. We also want to ensure that by 2020 that the curricula of all BSW and generalist MSW programs include more robust macro direct content and more equitably bridge the micro and macro divide.

To date we have had many successes! Here are just a recent few:

  • Speaking at key political and policy venues such as C.R.I.S.P.’s “Social Work on Capitol Hill” Days;
  • Securing revisions to the “Social Work” entry in the Department of Labor/BLS Occupational Handbook;
  • Strengthening CSWE EPAS 2015 to make macro curricula more pronounced;
  • Working with ACOSA, NSWM, ISP to produce a Macro Specialization guide to showcase standards, models of robust macro curricula, exemplars of syllabi, etc.
  • Collaborating with the leadership of ACOSA (Association for Community Organization & Social Administration), NSWN (Network for Social Work Management), NASW (National Association of Social Workers), CSWE (Council on Social Work Education), (ISP) Influencing Social Policy, BPD (Bachelor Program Directors) & ASWB (Association of Social Work Boards)
  • Participating in The Coalition for Policy Education and Practice in Social Work.
  • Producing a “Macro Matters” YouTube video. Search “Special commission to advance macro social work

JOIN A SPECIAL COMMISSION ACTION CLUSTER (AC)

AC I. A focus on Practice materials including those that bridge our traditional macro- micro 'divide' to attract macro students. This includes identifying, producing and utilizing resources to strengthen or expand macro content and/or a macro specialization. This AC focuses internally in building your own program and/or leadership at your institution. This will be done with ACOSA’s resource enhancement project. Some examples, hold an event or program at your school to “Make Macro Matter;” Share relevant curricula, syllabi, templates, student classroom or field assignment; Share recruitment material, pamphlets, videos, events for attracting macro students; Create or mentor a macro social work student network/chapter (MSWSN). AC II. A focus on Connecting with Social Workers and other professional and community colleagues by outreaching, networking, and disseminating macro- related materials, research, webinars, blogs, presentations, speaking at public meetings, other activity through social media. This AC focuses on the external environment. Some examples: Present a macro –related topic at a conference or public event; Participate in a webinar or other on-line format. AC III. A focus on expanding or strengthening professional leadership roles and connections with other social work organizations, developing strategies to mobilize various constituent groups in support of the Special Commission goals; Serving on a Committee, Council, Commission, Board of CSWE; Serving on a Committee, Council, Commission, Board of another organization. AC IV. A focus on greater visibility for the SC and other “macro matters” strategies and activities to increase the visibility and voice of the SC. To this end this AC will (1) be shaped by surveys that document the SC accomplishments, progress and disseminate information about SC accomplishments to increase the visibility and voice of the SC .(2) It will analyze the CSWE Data continue to work with the Dept. of Labor/ Bureau of Labor Statistics to broaden the Social Work Job and Career description; Licensing & macro social work It will further (3) develop framework that highlight the context, goals, activities and successes of the SC. AC V. will focus on a Strategic Campaign to achieve 20% by 2020” having 20% of all social work masters level students enrolled in a macro concentration by 2020. An important part of this is for CSWE to agree to advance this goal as well, starting with CSWE Board endorsement of the goal and direction to staff to undertake efforts to aid in its accomplishment, which have already begun.
